The hot summer months are here, but dry skin after a day in the sun is not an option. Time for some sorbitol please!
One small fruit sugar – one large effect
Sorbitol is a natural product occurring in many stone fruits including plums, apricots, peaches, apples and pears. Nutritionally, sorbitol has about 60% the sweetness of processed sugar making it a viable alternative sweetener for diabetics.
In nature, sorbitol serves to bind water molecules making it an ideal humectant. For this reason, sorbitol is an ideal moisturizing factor that can hold its own with other moisturizing champions - even Hyaluronic acid! In the skin, this water-binding property creates a more robust skin barrier and increases the skin’s hydration.
In terms of our skin, sorbitol is sweet!
Once sorbitol is applied, it is incorporated into our skin’s natural barrier, thus strengthening it. With this added support less moisture is lost to our environment, and the skin itself holds more moisture.
This increase in hydration helps:
- Our skin appear more vital and invigorated
- Plump our skin thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Activate the enzymes in our skin’s outer layer resulting in a better turnover of dead skin cells and a smoother complexion
